I'M TOO YOUNG/OLD/UNFIT/OVERWEIGHT/[INSERT-EXCUSE-HERE]
Fencing is a sport that you can start at an early age and stay with for the remainder of your life. Competitively, competitions run Under 9 events through to 70 + events (Category 4 Veterans). Fencing is a great way to improve your fitness, and you can put as much, or as little physical effort in as you wish.
If you're a very large person, let us know in advance. This is simply so we can make sure we've got jackets available in your size
DOES IT HURT?
We'll not lie to you, it can do. Most of the time, not at all. If it hurt all the time, the rest of us wouldn't do it. But occasionally a hit will land hard and you may be bruised. This is the exception rather than the rule. Beginners are admittedly more susceptible to heavy hits, but the more you stick with it, the less it will happen. If you're going home bruised every week, something's very wrong.
DON'T I NEED LOTS OF EXPENSIVE KIT?
Not to start. The club will provide everything you need to get you started, and there is no expectation on you to buy unless you intend to compete. Kit can be bought piecemeal and you can pay as much, or as little, as you want. Your coach can advise you on equipment when you're ready.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
Easy - yourself, a T-shirt, track-suit trousers or equivalent, trainers, a water bottle and a towel if you wish. Fencing is a hot and sweaty sport, please do not underestimate the importance of bringing water.
I'M NOT SURE...
If you're not sure, come along to the first session and have a go. You can get a taste of the sport quickly and see if you want to pursue and complete the full beginners' course
